2018 Recap

Saving Lives, One Child at a Time.

On Saturday, July 21st, 63 volunteers joined together with the “Be a Player Foundation” to provide more than 360

physical examinations to local kids who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to get them or couldn’t afford them.  Volunteers included local physician assistants, physician assistant students from the Nova Southeastern University PA Program, physicians and nurses.  Many of these kids wanted to participate in school sports activities and required these exams to play.  Other kids were brought by their parents just to get an exam, often times the first one of their life.

Under the direction of John Byrnes, PA-C, the medical volunteers worked all day to make sure that every kid that showed up received an exam.  The “Be a Player Foundation” did their best to ensure the kids had a memorable time by providing gifts of athletic equipment, and plenty of food and drink!

This was the tenth year in which the NSU PA Program students partnered with local community medical outreach programs such as “Be a Player”.  Under the leadership and supervision of faculty clinical coordinator Sue Ryan, PA-C, they worked tirelessly and thoroughly throughout the day in providing excellent physical exams to the kids in attendance.  Ben Feld, PA-C, a longtime supporter of this event, worked with Sue Ryan in providing direction and supervision.  Dr. Tom Walsh, a cardiologist  from the Florida Heart Group, was there to evaluate any heart problem that may have been detected.  EKG’s were available if needed, provided by Sabrina Berlin and Tom Berlin.  Anne Knoll, RN, (another longtime supporter and “veteran” of local charitable medical events in the community), along with 5 of her nursing colleagues from Florida Hospital Winter Park did all of the vital signs for the kids prior to their exams.  Under the direction of Andrew Reber from the Orlando Orthopedic Clinic, 5 athletic trainers performed musculoskeletal exams on each kid to ensure joint and skeletal stability and motion.

The day was long, but the outcome was very fulfilling for all the volunteers, knowing that each of these kids had the best exam possible.  And whether sports or just plain life was in their future, they were set to go another year!
